Formed in 1885 with the purchase of the Norwegian Barque Homewood which continued to sail under Norwegian registry together with the Norwood. In 1891 the company purchased their first steamship Toftwood and also registered her under the Norwegian flag. After 1897 with the purchase of Riftswood, all ships were registered in Middlesbrough.
In 1907 the Meteor SS Co was formed to operate coasting and short sea ships. During the Great War, the company lost 13 ships to enemy action, several ships were sold or lost to marine hazards and at the end of the war, only six ships remained in the fleet. The fleet was rebuilt between the wars and as well as short sea trading, operated from Swansea and Port Talbot to Quebec and Montreal when the river was free from ice and to South Africa, Mauritius, Australia and the River Plate when the St. Lawrence was closed. During the Second World War, the company lost nine deep sea ships and two coasters and by the end of the war owned only seven ships. After the war, the company entered the Mediterranean trade and operated a regular service between Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Bristol Channel ports and Marseilles, Genoa, Leghorn, Naples and Sicily. Services were also run between Toronto, Hamilton, Montreal, and St. John’s NF in the summer, returning to Mediterranean services during the winter months. In 1966 it was decided to wind up the steamship line and the ships were gradually sold off and by 1968 the last ship had been sold.
